Kathmandu (RSS) : Politicians and civil society leaders have stressed the need the intensive homework on liability assessment at home prior to the ratification of the ILO C189 and UN C1990.
At a roundtable meeting organized by Pourakhi Nepal in the capital city on Wednesday with the policymakers and practitioners on ILO C189 and UN C1990 ratification, the lawmakers, civil society leaders and stakeholders argued that the government first should assess its liabilities prior to ratifying those conventions.
On the occasion, lawmaker Sarita Neupane pledged to raise the issue in her parliamentary committee regarding the ratification of the ILO C189. She, however, said that political instability was the reason for our failure to ratify the ILO Convention though there is nothing wrong to go ahead.
During the programme, Chairperson of Industry, Commerce, Labour and Consumers’ Welfare Committee Bimal Prasad Shrivastav said that the government institutions should maintain the exact data on migrants so as to protect their rights as well. He also said that the laws and instruments should be fully implemented in regard to the cases of labourers in each and every institution.
Likewise, President of the National Concern and Coordination Committee of the National Assembly Dil Kumari Rawal (Parbati) and lawmaker Sarita Giri also laid emphasis on coordination among the concerned stakeholders to move ahead in this issue.
Chairperson of Pourakhi Nepal Manju Gurung said that the programme was organized to share and receive ideas on real picture of UN Convention 1990 and ILO C189 ratification by Nepal government and its effective implementation that helps to ensure the rights of the migrant workers and their families.
However, other participants at the programme, said that Nepal won’t have to bear additional economic, political and social liabilities after ratifying the ILO Convention and added that trade unions and civil society of Nepal contributed a lot from Nepal to push the ILO C189 forward since long back. So far, 26 nations have ratified the ILO C189.
